RTC SCORE

7.0

#6 of 16 with enough data

Our verdict

A fit for higher-volume or multi-location restaurants that want interchange with no percentage markup, a flat $250 a month and published fees, and can live with email support and standalone terminals. Less of a fit for small restaurants or ones that need their processor built into a restaurant POS.

What we like

  • No percentage markup on Visa, Mastercard and Discover: interchange plus 15¢ in every channel.
  • Its fees are in a public table, with a $0 termination fee and month-to-month service.
  • Next-business-day payouts at no cost; instant payouts for 1.5%.
  • 24/7 support for urgent payment issues.
  • Credit card surcharging on its terminals and virtual terminal, with no published fee.

What to watch

  • $250 a month makes it expensive at low volume; Finix says it works best from $5,000 a month.
  • No integration with a named restaurant POS: its terminals work standalone or through its POS API.
  • Regular support is by email only, with no phone line.
  • Terminal prices aren't public, and its published merchant terms let fee changes take effect on notice (Finix only tries to give 30 days) and let it require a reserve for any reason related to your use of the service.

Before you pass the card fee to your customers

This vendor offers a program that passes the card cost to your customers. Card network rules cap credit card surcharges (Visa 3%, Mastercard 4%) and never allow them on debit, and some states ban or limit them.

This is general information, not legal advice. Card network rules and state laws change, and how they apply depends on your business: check with a lawyer and with your processor before adding a surcharge or a cash discount.
