We may earn money from this request. How we make money
Mobile and seasonal businesses, where low fixed costs, cellular data and short commitments matter.
What matters in a food truck
A food truck moves, and many work by season. You need a POS that runs on cellular data and battery, keeps taking payments when the signal drops and doesn't cost much in the months you're parked.
What to look for
- Mobility. Devices that run on cellular data and battery, and hold up outdoors.
- Offline payments. Whether you can keep taking cards with no signal, and who carries the risk if a card is declined later.
- Low fixed costs. Monthly fees you pay even when you're not operating hurt a seasonal business.
- Short commitments. A long contract with an early termination fee is a bad fit for a business that may close for the winter or change plans. Here, the term and the cost of leaving weigh heavily.
- Hardware price. What the equipment costs upfront, and whether it's yours.
- Speed in line. Fast order entry and payments when the line is long.
How this ranking works
This ranking only includes POS systems that serve food trucks. They're scored with our public model and any adjustments for this type of business, listed in our methodology. Here, cost and contract terms weigh more than in the overall ranking, because a long commitment hurts a seasonal business.
Not everything on this list counts toward the score yet: we only score what we can research for most vendors. For the rest, like offline payments and cellular data, check the data we show for each POS and ask about it in the demo.
Weigh more here than in the overall ranking: 36-month total cost (reference restaurant), initial term, early termination fee, exclusive processing commitment, length of automatic renewals, notice to avoid renewal, and trial or money-back period.
POS systems with enough verified data to be ranked: 3 of 4. 4 POS systems for food trucks: 3 ranked · 1 listed apart. Ranked: enough verified data. Listed apart: not enough data to score. Below 60% completeness, a POS isn't ranked. The score sets the order, with the same rules for every POS.

Not enough verified data to rank
We only rank a POS once we've verified enough of its key facts. These are listed so you know we looked at them.
