Cost to get started

The cash your restaurant puts in before it opens on the new POS, in our reference scenario ($30k/month in card sales, $35 average ticket, 2 terminals, 1 location, 36 months): equipment you buy up front plus one-time setup or installation fees. Same rows for every POS.

What's missing

  • Terminals: not published.

Left out and why

  • Monthly and yearly charges (rent, software, yearly fees per device) are part of the 36-month cost, not of the entry cost.

Switching or signing bonus

What the vendor's current promotions are worth to our reference restaurant ($30k/month in card sales, $35 average ticket, 2 terminals, 1 location, 36 months), an established restaurant switching from another company's POS.

Promotions end and change, so we re-check them: one with no end date comes down if we can't re-check it within 30 days, and an expired one stops counting the day after it ends.

Current promotion

  • Discount

Not publishedSource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)The discount is the workstation's list price minus $1, and Oracle does not publish that list price.
    Conditions
Oracle's One for One offer: move to Simphony and get a new workstation for $1. Oracle's Simphony page lists Workstation 8, Workstation 6 and Tablet 700 as $1 POS hardware, and its tablet page says the $1 tablet comes with no strings attached, but the offer's landing page says restrictions apply and to request a call back for details. Oracle publishes no unit limit, eligibility rules, end date or required Simphony term; the offer goes through a sales call-back form. It is a hardware price, not cash and not a payment of your current provider's early termination fee.
    Valid until
The vendor publishes no end date. We take it down if we can't re-check it within 30 days.

Counts in the RTC Score only if our reference restaurant qualifies.

The switching or signing incentive is one of the criteria with the most weight in the RTC Score. We count a promotion only while it's current, with a fixed published amount and conditions our reference restaurant meets. "Up to" amounts, buyouts of your current contract and unpublished amounts don't count. The cost calculator subtracts one only when your numbers qualify.

Hardware warranty

The same rows for every POS: how long the main terminal is covered against defects when you get it a standard way (buying, leasing, renting, a subscription or a loan), the conditions, including what it leaves out and what keeping it costs, and the price to replace that terminal outside the coverage.

Hardware warranty included1 yearSource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)One year from delivery on Oracle Point of Service hardware (formerly MICROS), such as Workstation 6 and 8 and Tablet 700.
Warranty conditionsParts that need a technician get an on-site visit, which Oracle makes commercially reasonable efforts to provide within 2 business days inside its service locations; parts you can replace yourself are shipped to you. If you don't return a replaced part within 45 days, Oracle charges its then-current fee for it, with a $500 minimum. Not covered: misuse, abuse, accidents, neglect, unauthorized repair or installation and normal wear; power cords, cables, batteries and mounting brackets count as consumables. Hardware not bought from Oracle or an authorized distributor is excluded, the warranty is only for the original buyer or lessee and may be void if title is transferred, and ships and island countries get parts exchange only. Paid Premier Support and next-business-day Advanced Parts Exchange are available for POS hardware, priced by quote.Source: Oracle (opens in a new tab)
Price to replace the main terminalNot publishedSee my price for Oracle MICROS Simphony (opens the provider's site in a new tab)Source: Oracle (opens in a new tab)Oracle publishes no list price for Workstation 8 or Workstation 6 outside its $1 workstation offer for restaurants moving to Simphony.

The RTC Score only counts how long defects are covered. What the coverage leaves out (accidents, theft, loss) and what it costs to keep are in the conditions. A protection plan sold separately doesn't count; if the vendor offers one, it's in the conditions. The replacement price isn't added to the 36-month cost, because there's no public data on how often equipment fails.

Trial or money-back period

Whether you can try the POS and leave, and what it costs you if you do. Same rows for every POS.

Trial or money-back periodNone publishedSource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)We checked Oracle's restaurant POS, Simphony and payment processing pages: no trial or money-back window is published.
Trial periodN/ASource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)
Charges during the trialN/ASource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)Oracle publishes no trial.
Trial conditionsNo trial or refund window is published; Oracle offers a demo or a quote.Source: Oracle (opens in a new tab)

In the RTC Score the trial is part of the contract block, the lowest weight in the model: full points when you can try it with no software charges or get your money back, half when you can cancel without the early termination fee but the charges during the trial are yours.

All the data, with sources

Each value links to its source. "Not published" means the vendor doesn't disclose it; "Unconfirmed" means we looked and couldn't confirm it. Data points we have for fewer than four vendors are left out until we can compare them.

Software

Software fromQuote onlySee my price for Oracle MICROS Simphony (opens the provider's site in a new tab)Source: Oracle (opens in a new tab)Oracle's price list names the Simphony Plus Edition fees (a revenue center fee and a fee per customer transaction, tiered by monthly volume) but shows no amount for them, while it does show the card rates. Simphony is priced by quote, and Oracle has retired its Essentials edition.
Software billed perLocationSource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)Simphony Plus Edition is metered: a fee per revenue center plus a fee per customer transaction. A revenue center is a unit with its own reports inside a location (a restaurant and its bar can be two), so one location can pay for more than one.
Kitchen display (KDS) fee$0/mo per deviceSource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)The kitchen display software is among the modules included in Simphony Plus Edition (metered), with no separate fee in its service description. The display hardware is bought apart, and the Single-Tenant Edition charges per kitchen display.

Dual pricing or surcharge programNoSource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)Simphony can add a credit card surcharge as a service charge (set by the payment provider or by a plug-in), but Oracle publishes no dual pricing, surcharge or cash discount program for US restaurants with its conditions, and its Oracle Payments pages don't offer one. It is not counted until we can confirm one.

Other fees in the contractWith Oracle Payments: a $15 fee per chargeback; American Express at 3.10% + 15¢; point-to-point encrypted (P2PE) payments at 2.47% + 20¢ (Amex 3.12% + 20¢); fees are taken daily from your card deposits, and if the service ends and deposits don't cover what you owe, Oracle bills the rest. You must buy Oracle's payment terminals (Verifone or Castles models) to use it. Simphony Plus Edition can also charge extended data storage (14 to 36 months) per revenue center, at a price not published.Source: Oracle (opens in a new tab)
Hardware
Data pointValue
HardwareYou buy it()Source: Oracle (opens in a new tab)You buy Oracle's POS hardware (Workstation 6 and 8, Tablet 700); Oracle's warranty also mentions lessees. Its One for One offer sells a workstation for $1 to restaurants moving to Simphony.
Hardware works with another processorYesSource: Oracle (opens in a new tab)Simphony workstations work with Oracle Payments or another payment provider through an Oracle-approved interface, so changing processor doesn't mean changing the POS terminal. Oracle Payments needs Oracle's own card readers.

Early termination feeOracle's Cloud Services Agreement makes an order non-cancelable and the sums paid nonrefundable, and it has no clause to leave early for convenience. If Oracle ends your order because you breached it, you pay what had accrued plus all sums remaining unpaid for the order. Oracle publishes no fee formula; what you owe if you leave during the initial services period depends on your order. After that period, either side can end the service with 60 days' notice. Right to raise prices during the termSimphony usage is charged at the rates in your order.
